How to Defend Your Property from Burglars – Simple Strategies

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Locksmith techniques may be fun to take on as a hobby or as a way to earn a living. Most of those who want to work as locksmiths go through intensive training and apprenticeship before they can get their license. To become a certified locksmith, one must pass a battery of tests including a professionalism test that will assess a smith’s moral approach to the trade. Official recognition is established determined by the performance of the individual in the test.

But expert locksmiths are not the only ones who know the skills required to perform as a locksmith. The methods are difficult to learn but a determined individual can grasp the concepts fast. Some of those criminals might have gone through training, or they may have experimented with locks in preparation for what they will do.

Most homeowners would agree that a lock professional who has gone rogue and a person who intends to use his skills to break into buildings are the greatest threats in a middle class neighborhood. Here are some straightforward ideas on the way you can keep from becoming a target of a robbery.

1. Examine the locks on Your Doorways

One sign of a break-in attempt is a faulty lock. If the lock won’t turn and the mechanisms seems to be damaged, someone may have attempted to open it by force. A skill called lockpicking is the first one that a thief learns, but he may have botched at it or he was in a hurry. This should also tell you that you may risk damaging your own lock if you try to undo it without the real key.

One technique that is commonly used to break into houses or cars is lock bumping. Bumping can be done unsystematically. If your locking devices are not working properly, it may not be an accident. What you need to do is to change your lock as soon as possible.

2. Locate a Lock Professional You Can Trust

There is a market for locksmiths in each and every city, and for sure, your city has several dependable blacksmiths. Go by word of mouth when it involves hiring a locksmith. This is an essential step if you are new to the community and you do not know who’s who. If a company has been there for a long time, then they must be reliable. The point is, you must have somebody to call should you have a lock out emergency. Asking random individuals about the way to work your locks should you lock yourself out of your house is not a good idea.

A lock professional’s business is highly dependent on the trust that his clients have for him. Your job as a house owner is to find out who is who, and who is the best. You should have an excellent locksmith in your speed dial should you need to have a lock fixed or you locked yourself out of your own residence.

3. Upgrade Your Locks

Most locking devices right now are top grade, and if you’re not using these, you may be an easy target for thieves. Producers are always coming up with tactics to make their locks undefeatable. An average intruder would rather pick an easier target. You should upgrade your locks if you suspect that your old ones are easy to break into.

It’s more important to find out how robbers would pick locks than be vulnerable to burglary. Study more about to avoid housebreaking incidents and car security over the net.

Our Local Neighborhood Cleveland Lock Tech

Monday, May 31st, 2010

This is the story of how one family fell in love with a car and, then with a car key. It is a tale of money, loss, necessity, frustration and relief. This is the story of how we lost our car key and had to dole out way too much money to our local neighborhood ignition switch and lock expert.

When my wife and I decided to move to the west coast with our one-year-old daughter, we needed a car. We hadn’t bought a new car yet and we were quite excited to get one. With a little money to our names, we went out looking. We needed something that was safe for our new family and large enough to haul most of what we owned across country comfortably. We found the new Chrysler Pacifica was perfect.

What really sold us were not just the features of the car itself but the features of the key. This key could not only open and close doors, but lift the lift gate and drop it, set the security and start the car from quite a distance. We loved this key.

Our adventure was a grand one. We used the key quite often and wondered what we would have done without it’s abilities given all the stuff we were always toteing. But, when we arrived in LA, it wasn’t long before a key was lost. My wife will tell you I lost it.

Chrysler told us that the key would be $100 to replace. That is why it was so full of features, it cost a fortune. We couldn’t afford it so we resigned ourselves to only having one key and trading off.

We got used to doing that and after a few years were over the loss of the key. Although, we didn’t really like the key nearly as much anymore. Then one day it happened, the thing we dreaded – I lost the other key! Now we had none and would have to pay a fortune to replace them. We looked everywhere but to no avail. We called Chrysler and local Cleveland lock techs who made these keys. It was now much more than the $100 is was a few years back.

Well, we couldn’t find it and we needed to drive so, we resigned ourselves to getting a new key. When the Cleveland lock tech came, he actually gave us a deal and we got two keys for almost the price of one. Chrysler wouldn’t have done that for us. However, the new keys didn’t have all the buttons, they couldn’t lift the lift gate or disable the alarm. So, now whenever we enter the car, the alarm goes off and we have to start the engine to disable it.

So, we don’t love the car so much anymore and we certainly don’t love the key too much anymore. But, as it turns out, after having the new keys made, our daughter decided to unwrap a gift she made for us and hid under the counter. It was our key! Don’t worry, we still love her.

Beaverton Lock Tech: How The Trade Has Evolved

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Historically, lock techs were, as the name implies, artisans who created entire locks or security systems by working with metal, using files, forges, and other tools to create and fine tune the mechanism. A Beaverton lock repair pro, rather than just creating a few locks in a lifetime is more likely to fine tune, repair and consult on entire security systems. Mass production has removed much of the need for expertise in creating a key. Many hardware stores have a machine that will duplicate a key.

Today, lock techs tend to specialize in certain types of locks. For example, a lock tech may work with automobile locks and keys, letting stranded drivers back into their locked automobiles. A lock tech may become a safe and vault technician, changing the combination and adding additional layers of security as they are identified in the industry.

Many lock techs serve as security analysts. They provide a service to individuals and businesses searching for ways to protect valuable assets. Performing duties of a lock tech may only be a part of what a security consultant does. Identifying shortfalls in system security that can create an opportunity for theft or unlawful access is a large part of many lock techs’ duties.

lock techs are trained to install, key and service electronic security systems. Transponders in vehicles must be maintained. Institutions may utilize keypads and other security devices to allow authorized personnel to enter while keeping intruders out. Consultants work with organizations and businesses to identify achievable and affordable levels of security.

lock techs replace or repair lock sets. They also work on other parts of doors and access points. Door closures, hinges, electric strikes and other hardware for doors come within the expertise of today’s lock tech.

Training for lock techs historically usually meant an apprenticeship under a Master lock tech. A few experts still use the nomenclature today, but it can also be used by those who do not have a level of competence to warrant the title. In the past, a lock tech guild was created in many areas where secrets about locks and keys were jealously guarded. The secrecy caused danger to the public in some instances where lock deficiencies were only known to a select few.

A certified Beaverton lock tech is proud to display credentials such as those offered by the Associated lock techs of America. Formal classes are often available in trade school or vocational schools. lock techs can get basic training through a school. Advanced classes, enabling specialization in certain types of security systems, are offered by manufacturers and distributors.

Work With Spring Valley Locksmith For Topnotch Security

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Take a good look at your key ring. Most people have 10 keys on their ring for home, office, car, maybe a mailbox, a parent’s or friend’s home. We all open and close locks all day long and we hardly ever think about it ‘ until someone gets past our security. That’s why it’s a good idea to set up a consultation with commercial locksmiths to talk about security for your home, business and automobile.

Hollywood movies make picking a lock look simple and easy. In reality, says Spring Valley locksmith, it takes a lot more than a paper clip or a hairpin to open a lock.

Scary thoughts, aren’t they? We hate to have to be suspicious, yet it’s smart to be reasonably cautious when you’re settling into a new location. Reports prepared by U. S. Department of Justice say that almost two-thirds of all break-ins happen without forced entry ‘ meaning that someone had a duplicate key to get into a home or office. Furthermore, law enforcement experts say that many home break-ins result from “bumping” or picking a lock.

For instance, the common deadbolt lock used in many homes involves lining up a bolt or a latch embedded in the door with a notch in the doorframe. When you turn the lock, the bolt extends into the doorframe plate. This method of securing the door and the frame together assures that the door stays shut until the bolt is retracted.

* Are your home’s existing locks secure enough, or does your neighborhood environment suggest a need for high-security locks?

However, over the past 30 years, burglars have been trying to get around locks like deadbolts with a technique known as “bump keying.” This method involves using a false key, or “bump key, ” to put pressure on the back of the lock, which in turn makes the cylinders respond as if the proper key was used. Burglars have used this method enough over the past decades that lock makers created new security devices to thwart “bump” keys.

A locksmith studies these kinds of technological advances in security every day. In addition to installing locks that protect against bump keys, a professional locksmith can counsel property owners on many ways to protect your family, employees and their belongings. Among these advances are such things as high-security locks, double-sided locks for glass doors, computerized key transponders and other innovations to prevent intruders from burglarizing car, home or business.

A Spring Valley locksmith has the goal to serve customers with customized security consultations. People work so hard to earn property, whether it’s for business, a home or a car. A locksmith understands this, and stands ready to help residents and business owners keep themselves and their possessions as safe and secure as possible. Consult with a locksmith soon about security needs.
